OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener

These are great. Very easy to turn. They do take a few tries to get used to because they are easier than you would think and they don’t “Feel” like they are working. You will need to firmly pull off the can top when through cutting. I really like these and would recommend to anyone!

Finally, a can opener that continues to work! My mother has a cheap can opener she purchased in the 80s that still works perfectly. I am on my 4 in 8 years. And while, yes, I do open a fair amount of cans, that’s the job it’s meant for. My previous one only lasted 4 weeks, and 5 cans before it just stopped working. Enter the OXO Smooth Edge Can Opener. I’ve tried a smooth edge style before, and it was only so-so, and I was eager to see how OXO would stack up. Finally I’ve found a can opener that works! I’ve opened maybe a cozen cans already, and it works just as well now as it did on the first can. There is a little side lever to lift the top without actually touching the can. No sharp edges were left behind, the handle is very comfortable and easy to turn and you can even place the top back on for a makeshift lid.It is VERY large, and something to take into consideration, as it easily takes up double the space of a traditional can opener.Time will tell its it lasts 30 years, but with OXO’s satisfaction guarantee, as well as my previous experience with their brand, this was clearly worth trying.

This Oxo Can Opener (Model 1049953) works well after some learning. This is my first “Smooth Edge” can opener, and it took some getting used to. It’s extremely comfortable in the hand, and obviously well made – as OXO products tend to be. My wife and I both used it, and she liked it immediately. I found it awkward to hold it “at the front” of the can, rather than along the side (see photo), and still have a devil of a time aligning the narrow gear correctly on the can’s rim to have it engage. Once engaged it turns smoothly, but there is no visual indication of the progress, so I can only tell I’m done by the change in force needed to turn the cutting wheel. At that point the lid and rim should pull off easily, and there is a miniature set of “pliers” built into the unit to grab the rim and pop the top (see photo). The result is certainly a smoother cut with no sharp edge. Choosing it is obviously a personal preference; my wife will continue to use it while I’ll stick with a more traditional can opener. It’ comes at a hefty price but I’m sure it will last a long, long time.

This can opener replaced one just like it that lasted about 20 years. It did not break. The cutting wheel just dulled or wore out. This is a very solid piece of equipment, easy to grip and ergonomic. We open a lot of cans, so it gets used a lot. Have never come across a can that it cannot grip or open. It does not leave sharp edges on the cut surfaces, so also safe for the user. Overall, a good bet if you want a manual opener.

Nice substantial well made can opener. Takes a bit of thought to work it at first — it could stand to come with better directions, at least for me. Even my husband struggled a bit to figure out how to use it the first time, but once we did, it was really nice not to have sharp edges on the cans. It turns easily, it has a great grip that is comfortable.

Comfortable in the hand and easy to use. The horizontal cut leaves the can and lid without sharp edges. Good product for anyone.

Takes a little getting used to the switch but once you do you won’t go back to the old school can openers.

the directions for use of the product were self-explanatory without hoops to decipher. surprisingly, the can-opener worked very well the first time I tried it.

Really impressed with this opener. Easy to use after understanding how it works.
